Fairbanks Ranch is an upscale, master-planned community nestled in the rolling hills of Rancho Santa Fe, California. Consisting of 620 well-manicured estates ranging in size from a half-acre to 10 acres, the community was designed to preserve the surrounding natural beauty. Home designs must be approved by the community's Architectural Committee, though the committee has approved a variety of design styles including Mediterranean, Tuscan, English Tudor, Country French and California Ranch.
Residents of this beautiful community enjoy a variety of amenities including a lakeside clubhouse, tennis courts, and a community library converted from a pump house built in the 1920s. There are also 3 miles of fenced-in horse riding trails, a fitness course, a 17-acre equestrian center with a 27-stall barn, two lakes and 40 acres of open space with scattered shaded picnic areas.
The history of Fairbanks Ranch dates back to 1924, when beloved American actor Douglas Fairbanks purchased 800 acres in Southern California and named it "Rancho Zorro," or "Fox Ranch." Douglas had a dam built to capture water and planted more than 300 acres of Valencia oranges. Fairbanks commissioned architect Wallace Neff to design a dream home for he and wife Mary Pickford, but the couple were divorced before the project began. The home was built as planned, but Fairbanks rarely visited because his second wife viewed the property as too isolated. Rancho Zorro continued to operate as an orange grove until the 1950s, when Fairbanks's heirs sold the property. The property switched hands several times before 1977, when Ray Watt purchased the estate and set out to develop an elite community of luxury homesites befitting the ambience of Rancho Santa Fe. Deciding on the name Fairbanks Ranch in honor of the property's original owner, Watt subdivided the 1240 acres and started selling lots in 1981.
Students residing within the gated community of Fairbanks Ranch attend classes at Solana Santa Fe Elementary, Earl Warren Middle, and either Torrey Pines High or San Dieguito Academy. There are also several highly-rated private schools in the area. Homeowner dues for Fairbanks Ranch residents average about $450 a month.
